On October 22, 2010, a conference was organized by Professor Yannis Ioannides, Tufts University, in his capacity as Co-Chair of the Greek Study Group, which operates under the auspices of the Center for European Studies, Harvard University. There were three presentations and a panel discussion. Professor Gikas Hardouvelis, University of Piraeus and Chief Economist, Eurobank EFG, Athens, spoke on: “The Greek economy and its stability program.” He was followed by Professor Ricardo Reis, Columbia University, who spoke on “Portugal’s great depression and the 2010 debt crisis.” The third presentation was made by Professor Tano Santos, Columbia University, on: “Spain: the ‘fiesta’ years and the bust.” The panel discussion that followed was chaired by Professor Marios Angeletos, MIT. Professor Lucas Papademos, University of Athens and Academy of Athens, spoke on the broad European context of the crisis, Professor Costas Azariadis, University of Washington at St Louis, provided a perspective on the growth-inducing policies that Greece should implement, and Professor Enrico Spolaore, Tufts University, provided a historical perspective on the crisis with a principal emphasis on Italy.
